Il-14 Air Crash near Petrozavodsk

On 4 March 1978 a Soviet Air Defence Forces Ilyushin Il-14 crashed near Petrozavodsk when plane flied back to it's base Vaskovo Airport (Arkhangelsk) from Besovets Airport (Petrozavodsk).

Airplane lost control some 3 minutes after takeoff and crashed onto ice of Surguba Bay (Ukshozero Lake) about 3 kilometres short of the airport runway. On board were 6 crew-members and 1 passenger – pilot in command's wife. All of them were killed.

The probable cause of the accident was determined to be crew error due to the failure of navigation equipment.

A monument at the crash site (shore of Ukshozero Lake) was made of the empennage of a crashed airplane, but in the early 2000s it was stolen. In 2008 monument was rebuilt.
