Memorial to the Rune Singers from Kalevala

Memorial to the Rune Singers from Kalevala

The monument was unveiled on October 18, 1970 in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of famous Rune Singer Arhippa Perttunen. It is located in Kalevala Village (before 1963 – Uhtua Village), at the Cape of Rune Singers (the original name was the Cape of Hoteila).

According to legend, Elias Lönnrot wrote down runes from Arhippa Perttunen in 1834 exactly at this place.

The names of the Rune Singers are listed on the memorial plaque: Arhippa Perttunen, Ontrei Malinen, Vaassila Kieleväinen and Miihkali Perttunen.
