Monument to the Heroes of the War of IndependenceThe Monument to the Heroes was unveiled in Kuortane on August 14, 1921. The monument, designed by sculptor Gunnar Finne, is made of red granite from Leppävaara. The front of the monument depicts a young man holding the reins of a horse that is breaking loose. The back side of the monument is carved with a quatrain by Heikki Klemetti: The work has been honourably done, The monument is also carved: To the Sons of Kuortane who gave their lives in the War of Independence of 1918 On the base of the monument there are 12 shields with the names of 27 heroes who died in the Finnish War of Independence and one hero who died in Olonets Karelia. Toivo Tuomas Pulli (02.01.1901 – 30.06.1919), a peasant's son, participant of the War of Independence, volunteer of the Olonets expedition, fell in the Vidany Village. |
