Monument in Liminka

Monument to the Fallen in the Finnish War of Independence and in the Olonets Expedition was unveiled in Liminka on September 18, 1921. The inscriptions on the monument says:

”For the Fatherland”

and

”Better to fall with freedom in chest
and boldly go under the grass,
better to lie in the grave in own country,
than live as slave, obedient to oppressors.”

Among others, on the monument can be read the name of Eino Pitkänen (May 8, 1897 – June 6, 1919), commander of the group, who fell in the Olonets Karelia in the battle near the Tuloksa Village.
