Finnish artist Valdemar Pyysiäinen (before 1950 – Pesonen) was born in 1902 in Pitkäranta, Impilahti Parish. His family later moved to Tulema, the center of the neighboring Salmi Parish.

Before the Winter War, Valdemar Pesonen worked as a postman in Salmi. As an artist, he was self-taught and his career really took off only after the wars. The central theme of his art was the memories of his former life in the ceded Karelia.
