In 1997 in the historical centre of Petrozavodsk, The City Park, founded by Peter the Great, archaeologists found the station of ancient people dated back to 5-th millennium BC.
At the late Mesolithic era (from second part of 7-th to the middle of 4-th millenniums BC) the climate in Karelia was somewhat warmer than at present. The settlements of ancient people were always situated at the coast, giving most comfortable and secure conditions. There are quite a lot of relics of that period found on the northern, eastern and western coasts of Onego Lake. The unique burial ground on Oleniy Island near Kizhi archipelago is also timed to that period. |
