Monument to the Heroes in Värtsilä

Monument to the Heroes in Värtsilä

The Monument to the Heroes was unveiled in Värtsilä on 26 September 1920 in front of the local church, where five heroes of the War of Independence were buried in 1918.

The monument, made of red granite, was made according to the drawings of Master Builder Emil Henriksson. On the front of the monument is carved the inscription:

For home, freedom and their homeland they sacrificed their young lives.

In March 1940 and again in September 1944, the monument was evacuated behind the new border line and then erected next to the new Värtsilä church.
