Sortavala – Common Grave

Common Grave

Common Grave of Sortavala inhabitants lost at the suppression of The Red Revolt of 1918 and in actions against Red Army in Estonia and in Olonets Karelia in 1919, is located in the city's cemetery.

Three men from Sortavala fallen in the Olonets expedition.

Group leader Uljas Rikhard Jokinen (Elfving)* on May 9, 1919 died of wounds received on April 19 near the Matrosy Village.

Platoon commander Erkki Pietari Korhonen** fell in the battle of Polovina Village on June 13, 1919.

Platoon commander Veikko Pellervo Saikkonen*** fell on his birthday May 4, 1919 near the Matrosy Village.

The memorial was unveiled on September 18, 1921 in the presence of General Mannerheim. It was designed by Vyborg architect Otto Meurman.

The inscriptions on the monument says:

NO FEAR OR TREACHERY WE KNEW,
WE DISAPPEARED IN THE DARKNESS OF THE GRAVELAND,
OH, MOTHERLAND, IF YOUR FREEDOM WILL BE UNDER THE THREAT AGAIN,
WE SHALL RISE, AND WITH US WILL RISE AGAIN
