We Finns, your Kinship brothers, are now fighting against the enemy who has invaded our land. This enemy is the same one who has enslaved you for centuries and especially since 1918. He has killed and starved tens of thousands of you in forced labor; he has destroyed the peaceful life of your families and snatched the results of your work; he has nullified the development of your national culture and blasphemed the faith of your ancestors.
We Finns, have been able to live our free, national life since 1917, know the value of freedom. We have fought our freedom struggle for that in 1918 and 1939-40, and we have stood up to defend that with one accord right now.
Since the birth of Finland's independence, my people have wanted to bring national freedom to you, White Sea and Olonets Karelians. Now the moment has come to realize this ours brotherly, sacred intention.
I lead the Finnish people's army of free men, in whose ranks peasants, workers and civil servants fight side by side, to bring you national freedom.
Karelians! I invite you to join the ranks of my army for a happy future for the Finnish tribe and permanent peace. God is with us!
Commander-in-Chief headquarters July, 1941 Supreme commander of Defence Forces of Finland Field Marshal Mannerheim
